Who we are

My name is Simon and I am father to Asher, who lives with type 1. Asher is 13, a keen footballer and was diagnosed when he was 5.

I have been a filmmaker for 20 years working across a wide range of genres and platforms.

The motivation

Asher's diagnosis was a body blow. We were unprepared for life with T1D, and it took us a while to adapt. The shock and change still reverberates.

One thing that has become clearer as the years pass is that we have all been dialled-in on insulin therapy and glucose management, and not thinking anywhere near enough about Asher's emotional world with regards living with type 1.

This is to his detriment. There are so many companies, products, and courses centred on levels, numbers, algorithms.... but very little recognising the fundamental need to build emotional strength, or to design strategies for lifelong resilience. These aspects should be seen and thought about as as important as the physiological requirements of managing life with type 1.

Over the course of the last year i've been speaking to as many people living with type 1 as I could, as well as caregivers. One thing is abundantly clear; people living with type 1 are not supported or emotionally prepared or equipped to cope with the burden of living with chronic illness.

Anecdotally, I have learned that what seems to be the best 'armour' and ammunition in creating and sustaining resilience are;

Community and advocacy.

Community is the biggest balm. Whether it's your diabetes buddy, a support group, peer support or mentorship, or all of them combined - being around and communicating with other people living with type 1 has a massive positive effect for everyone I spoke with.

Advocacy leads to empowerment. Whether it's educating others, appearing in a film (!), writing a blog, or speaking at events- articulating your feelings about T1D, or what T1D is can help you feel more in control, and less constantly buffeted by diabetes.

So we hope these films will be personal, familial, communal, testimonial, educational, cathartic, eye-opening, relieving, empowering, enlightening, inspiring and a bit of fun.
